Various reasons topple us off the diet, health and fitness wagon. Some people just can’t get started, others lose steam along the way, others get there but a few months later they’ve gone back to their old habits and soon their old bodies.
Do you recognise yourself in there? You may have unwittingly tumbled down one of these pitfalls.
1. Be ACCOUNTABLE to no one
Keep your intention a secret. Tell no one about your diet/fitness goal. Do NOT tell anyone who will hold you accountable. If you do share your intention, tell someone who is invested in you NOT changing, like your equally unfit BFF.
One of the greatest factors in sticking with a new and/or difficult goal is accountability. As a student, would you have studied if there were no tests or exams? Perhaps you would have studied your favourite subjects but chances are you would’ve completely ignored the subjects you hated or found difficult. Being accountable “forces” you to do what needs to be done whether you feel like it or not.
The more accountability is built in the less willpower you need, or won’t power in the case of diets
2. MEASURE nothing
Do not keep track of what you eat on a daily basis. Do not keep track of how much you are exercising or how your fitness is improving. Do not reflect on the reasons why you sometimes cheat on your diet or don’t follow throw on your exercising. Most importantly, avoid looking at your body and cover it up with your ‘fat’ clothes until you feel skinny.
Because what gets measured gets improved. Things that you ignore, on the other hand, tend to degrade.
3. Think in ABSOLUTES
Aim for 100% perfection or nothing. When you “fail” throw the baby out with the bath water. If you succumb to a chocolate croissant at that breakfast meeting, abandon your diet for the rest of the day. If you eat something you shouldn’t on Wednesday, ditch that diet for the rest of the week, better yet wait until the first of next month.
4. Maintain your current MINDSET
Start the diet or fitness regime and just bank on willpower to get you there. Do NOT examine your thoughts and beliefs to ascertain how you got to be where you are.
Donald Trump, he of the orange helmet hairdo and bloated bank account once opened his talk at a wealth seminar by asking all the people who weren’t already millionaires to go home. He said, “if you are not already wealthy, you are unlikely to start now”. The Trump’s inflammatory statement was meant for effect but he had a point. If those people had millionaire mindsets they would already be millionaires. Similarly if you thought like a fit/slim/healthy person (unless if your current state is due to illness or pregnancy or some other “intervention”) you would already be fit or slim or healthy.
Thoughts -> Feelings -> Actions
To (permanently) change how you behave, you must change your thoughts.
5. Use HATE or DISGUST to drive your change
Act like a deranged army drill sergeant and use hate and disgust to motivate yourself to cut out all those empty calories, and get your arse off to the gym. Look at yourself in the mirror and remind yourself that you are a fat, unhealthy slob. Hide behind your fat clothes and have sex only in the dark. Hate your body.
Why is this a bad idea?
What you resist persists. You may get the weight off but believe me it will not stay off.
